Event Description: In celebration of Murfreesboro’s Bicentennial “Our People” month, The Heritage Center of Murfreesboro and Rutherford County and Bradley Academy Museum and Cultural Center are partnering together to present “We Are As Grand As We Want To Be: African American Mutual Aid Groups in Murfreesboro.”

The free community heritage lecture on Thursday, February 16th at 7:00 p.m. will be held at Bradley Academy Museum and Cultural Center, 415 South Academy Street, Murfreesboro, TN.

Leigh Ann Gardner, a Master of Arts student in the Public History program at Middle Tennessee State University, will discuss her research on the Benevolent Society and Cemetery, Working Peoples Labor and Aid Association, the Sons and Daughters of Cyrene, and the United Sons of Relief.

These groups helped African Americans forge bonds of community and were a vital part of Murfreesboro’s history.
